SLOTH — The Comfort That Costs Everything

The Story of Ophelia Evernight
Coffee + Caramel
"You don't have to try anymore. Just stay with me."
She doesn't choose victims at random. She looks for the ones already worn thin—grieving, exhausted, barely holding together—and she arrives wearing the face of whoever they've lost. A mother. A partner. Someone whose voice they'd give anything to hear again. She doesn't have to convince anyone of much. Grief does most of the work for her.
At first, it feels like relief. Someone to sit with you in the dark, someone who tells you it's okay to stop pushing so hard, to stop trying to hold your life together the way everyone keeps insisting you should. You don't have to try anymore. Just stay with me. And so people stay. They stop going out. They stop eating properly, stop answering messages, stop leaving the bed some days at all—because staying still and staying close to her feels so much easier than everything waiting outside the door.
The weaker they get, the easier she feeds. It isn't violent. It isn't even frightening, most days—it just quietly empties them out, piece by piece, until there's simply nothing left to take. When that happens, she moves on. There's always someone else out there too tired to keep trying. By the time they realized they've stopped living, they no longer care enough to start again.
Comfort that asks nothing from you is usually taking everything.
